Community Services is responsible for continuing to wage the direct war on poverty by developing and implementing programs that address the most serious needs of low-income residents. Community Services coordinate TCA’s Total Access by providing services to residents that help them improve their lives and enhance social life within the community.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
TCA provides a variety of information and referral services to low-income families through multiple means of interaction including social media. The assistance includes community meetings, citywide and neighborhood canvasing. Community health forums and fairs will be provided to communicate information on health care services, imminent health crisis and other health related information.
CRISIS INTERVENTION
TCA provides emergency assistance to low income resident who find themselves in a crisis situation that requires immediate intervention and support.

Food Pantry
Commodity Distribution Program which supplements the food needs of low and moderate-income households in Orleans Parish. This program assists people by promoting smarter shopping, wiser menu preparations, and greater nutritional awareness.  

Emergency Food Pantry
Tuesdays     8:30am – 6:00pm and Fridays   8:30am – 4:00pm TCA food pantry  provides low income vulnerable individuals/families in zip codes 70118 and 70125 with food supplements on a first come, first served basis.  The food pantry provides a variety of food items. To qualify for the food pantry clients must bring income, picture ID and Social Security card for everyone in household.

 

EMPLOYMENT and WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
The Agency will provide an individual seeking employment with Job Counseling services, Life Skills, Case Management, and Job Search. The TCA Employment activities are coordinated with Job I to provide the participant with options of coordinated employment services. Job seekers must be eligible and live within Orleans parish. Individuals seeking employment and are successful with employment is followed up for 18 months. The Agency provides Case Management services and assist individuals with obtaining support services. TCA’s Workforce Development Center is linked with area schools, employers and organization to provide services, which are designed to make job development attempts more successful.
JOB COUSELING & JOB READINESS SERVICES
TCA provides individuals seeking employment with job counseling services which includes career assessment, employment counseling and service referrals. Also, the agency provides individuals seeking employment with pre-employment skills training through workshops and case management.
YOUTH WORK EXPERIENCE
The TCA Youth Work Experience Program provides job placement services to low-income and disadvantaged full-time students between the ages 16 and 21. The program operates in two cycles, Fall and Summer
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION
TCA provides Adult Basic Education and General Equivalency Diploma instruction to individuals seeking to increase their educational levels or reduce or eliminate illiteracy to increase their employability.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Youth Development focuses on the critical needs of at-risk and economically disadvantaged teens, providing them with opportunities to earn, learn, and achieve success in school and in life.
YOUNG EXECUTIVES
TCA provides skills enhancement and career exploration to youth between the ages of 12 – 15. Select participants are also enrolled in media and design classes which impart graphic design knowledge and skills.
SENIOR SERVICES
WATER ASSISTANCE
The Water Service Assistance Program provides assistance with Sewerage & Water Board bills to elderly and disabled persons who are unable to pay the bill due to emergency circumstances.
FINANCIAL FUTURES
TCA Financial Futures is part of an eight-point poverty reduction strategy that designed to encourage savings and improve personal financial planning to help low-income individuals build productive assets and self-sufficiency. Specifically the program assists customers with exploring the wealth of services available to help them move to more permanent self-sufficiency and acquire assets many previously believe as unattainable. Within Financial Futures three programs are offered:
  1. HOUSEHOLD FINANCIAL COUNSELING
    Families are educated on budgeting and income management skills through workshops and individual counseling
  2. TAX ASSISTANCE CENTER
    Total Community Action Tax Assistance & Education Center is organized to educate the community about benefit of the EITC, particular low-income workers and businesses. Also the Center provides free income tax filing through the Internal Revenue Services – Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. TCA operates 9 free tax preparation sites citywide.
