On August 20, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act which created a variety of programs, including Community Action agencies, as part of his War on Poverty. He knew then as we know now, that the war against poverty must be won in the field, in every private home, in every public office, from the courthouse to the White House.

Total Community Action, Inc. (TCA) was established in 1964 to wage the war on poverty in New Orleans, Louisiana by promoting self-sufficiency for those of limited income, ensuring that all residents area able to live in dignity; by implementing innovative and cost effective programs to improve the lives and living conditions of the impoverished.

“Community Action Month is a wonderful opportunity to highlight and celebrate the impact Community Action has in the lives of families and communities across the country,” stated Thelma Harris French, President and Chief Executive Officer of TCA. “Community Action Agencies are successful every day in helping families achieve economic security. Given the unique needs of each family and community, Community Action is able to use a range of resources and programs to meet the local need sin creative and impactful ways.

TCA will utilize the synergy of Community Action Month to launch is triennial Community Assessment. The Community Assessment is a comprehensive assessment of community needs and resources. The community needs assessment will analyze the main sources of poverty and how it impacts the community. The Community Assessment is the first step in TCA triennial strategic planning process, and defining of the strategies and services that will be offered to support low income individuals and families to attain economic security.

TCA staff and volunteers will canvass targeted neighborhoods and community facilities throughout the month conducting survey interviews. A detailed schedule of the Community Assessment survey outreach is posted on the TCA website www.tca-nola.org; additionally Orleans Parish residents are encourage to complete the survey online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TCA2016CA
